Earthcomber for Cell Phones
Your carrier may charge you for air time and data while you are using Earthcomber. If you are using a downloadable version of Earthcomber, we strongly recommend that you purchase an "all you can eat" data plan from your carrier. Otherwise you might be charged every time you receive data from Earthcomber. As an alternative, check if your carrier offers a "mobile web" plan. These plans typically provide unlimited access to mobile web sites from your phone, sometimes starting at just $5 per month. Airtime charges normally still apply. If you sign up for one of these plans, make sure that you use the mobile web version of Earthcomber and not a downloadable version. In all cases, check with your carrier for complete pricing details.
Earthcomber helps you quickly find millions of locations -- both business and non-commercial -- that match your interests. We are supported by commercial advertisers who want to provide you with more information than simply their name, address, and business category. They want you to know when they're open, what they offer, and what makes them special. Their "ads" are rich information resources that you can review as you're searching for just the things that those businesses offer. Yes, it's advertising -- but advertising that serves your purposes. No pop-ups, no banner ads, just good information that helps you make better choices in life.
You can use Earthcomber without creating an account. But you should create a free account if you want to personalize any of the Look Lists that come with Earthcomber, or create your own customized lists for different moods and modes.
You can use the Internet browser on your Palm or Windows Mobile device to run the mobile web version of Earthcomber. Or, you can download a "heavier" version of Earthcomber that requires syncing your device regularly. Learn more about your options for Palm and Windows Mobile.
If you are trying to use the downloadable Earthcomber application, chances are that your Blackberry has restrictions on running unauthorized applications. Contact your organization's IT department and ask them to authorize www.earthcomber.com.
No! Earthcomber is completely committed to protecting your privacy. We do not disclose your personal information in any way.
While viewing the message on your phone, look for an Options menu or similar. On this menu, you might see an option called Activate Link or Go To. Select this option to go to the link we sent. If you still can't select the link, open your phone's Web application and type in the following URL: http://mobile.earthcomber.com. You will need to do this only once.
You see this message because you're not getting Earthcomber directly from your wireless operator. You can safely continue. Promise.
Look in your phone's Applications or Games folder. Palm - Windows Mobile Startup
If you bought a Spot Guide (such as Mobil Travel Guide or Moon Metro) from another website, your receipt should contain a Serial Number (sometimes called Registration Key, Activation Code, or similar) for each guide purchased. Find those Serial Numbers, and follow these steps:
Your Earthcomber-powered travel guides should now be installed. Palm OS Software
By default, Earthcomber Updater will install Earthcomber files directly onto your device (RAM). If you prefer, you can make Updater install files to your SD card. Here's how:
On some newer Palm devices (Tungsten T5, TX, Treo 650, LifeDrive, possibly others), HotSync will time out when synchronizing database files with many records. Some of Earthcomber's files are large enough to suffer from this problem. If your HotSync continues to fail, the following workaround (taken from Palm's knowledge base) might work:
With luck, your "stuck" files will now sync properly to your device. Please note that this "Wait Forever" is not a permanent setting. It is only active for the very next HotSync. So you might need to perform this step in the future, if you run into the problem again.
It's possible you have insufficient space available on your device. You could try removing some unwanted files to free up enough space, or HotSync to an SD card, instead.
There is a known problem with T5's synchronizing large files. Several Earthcomber maps and guides fall into this category. Palm has fixed this problem with a firmware update, available here. We applied this update to the T5 in our test lab and it solved these HotSync problems. If you don't want to perform the firmware update, however, you can use the T5's Drive Mode to move the files manually. Step by step:
Earthcomber should now be able to see the data files (maps, locations, guides, etc.) that you were unable to transfer via HotSync. Windows Mobile Software
Earthcomber was designed to run on a wide variety of Windows Mobile devices, and therefore does not take advantage of some of the more advanced features of later versions of the Windows Mobile platform (an example of such a feature is the ability to change the display from portrait mode to landscape mode). This warning, generated by Windows, is just letting you know that such newer features might not function gracefully in conjunction with Earthcomber. But you certainly can use Earthcomber on the newer Windows Mobile devices.
You are most likely running Windows Mobile Version 5.0 (or later). This version wants applications and their CAB installation files to be signed with a digital certificate. This certificate allows Windows Mobile to determine that the application comes from the company holding the certificate and not from some other source masquerading as a legitimate company. Certificates are traceable to a "Certificate Authority", of which there are several. For a certificate such as ours to be recognized as trusted, it must be traceable to one of the recognized authorities. This means that there must be a "root" certificate from that Certificate Authority present on your device. Our code and CABs are signed, and we trace to the root certificate from Baltimore Cybertrust, which is part of the Microsoft Mobile2Market program. If your device does not contain this certificate, then you receive the warning. Note, however, that this does not prevent you from installing Earthcomber, nor any other software.
We recommend that you use Earthcomber Updater to download and install the latest Windows Mobile version of Earthcomber to your handheld. However, if Updater is not working for you, you could try the installer which we distribute through download sites like Handango et al. It is available here:
Note that this will also install a sample map and location set, which you may want to remove after installation is complete.
The problem is with the version of Windows Mobile that is running on your device. Earthcomber supports Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition and later. This includes Windows Mobile Version 5.0. Note that this does NOT include Windows Mobile 2003 prior to the Second Edition. Many of these failures have occurred with the earlier versions of Windows Mobile 2003.
Unfortunately we do not have a fully automated method at the present time. Part of the problem is that Microsoft has not created ActiveSync for the Macintosh. We are aware of two third party sync programs available for Macintosh users: PocketMac (http://www.pocketmac.net/) and The Missing Sync for Windows Mobile (http://www.markspace.com/missingsync_windowsmobile.php). They both support Windows Mobile 2003, but neither supports Windows Mobile 5.0 at the date of this writing (March 2006). However, both are promising it in the near future. See their websites for details. If you use one of these products, then you could download Earthcomber files to a folder, and then synchronize them from there as you normally would. Step by step:
You get this error when ActiveSync tries to upgrade a piece of software that is still running on your device. Simply, start Earthcomber on your device, go to the Main Screen by tapping the Earthcomber Kiwi icon in the top-left corner of the screen. Then tap the "Options" menu at the bottom of the Main Screen and select "Exit Application". Next, you'll have to force the Earthcomber Updater to to install the Earthcomber Windows Mobile application again. This is required because when the installation fails on the device, the device does not report the failure back to your computer. Here are the steps for forcing the Updater to re-install Earthcomber on your device:
Earthcomber Updater
During installation, Earthcomber Updater will ask what kind of handheld device you have: Palm or Windows Mobile. It will then use this information to download the right files for your device, and to synchronize them properly. To check which selection is in effect:
If you made a mistake or have switched devices, this selection can be changed:
Earthcomber Updater is a "system tray" application. As such, it keeps an icon in the tray at the right side of your taskbar. When you click the "X", the window closes, but the program keeps running. While the program is running, it checks the install queue for Palm users and blinks if a HotSync is needed to keep your Earthcomber installation up to date. The Updater will also periodically check to see if any updates to the software, maps, locations, and guides are available on the Earthcomber website. To stop Earthcomber Updater entirely, do one of the following:
You can get maps and data (combs) from our Mobile Web Site here: http://www.earthcomber.com/mobile
Yes. The following are the steps you need to complete:

Earthcomber relies on many different kinds of files to deliver the mapping, guides, and location searching capabilities. Most of them are Palm Database files (ending in .pdb). Even the Windows Mobile software works with these .pdb files, so don't let that confuse you. The file types are the following:
