I have same issue

I have a Samsung sch-i730 running Windows Mobile 5.0 and I get this error every time I try to open up a map. I've downloaded the maps I need, but it keeps giving me the gwes.exe error only when I try to open a map.

Need Help Investigating This Issue

I apologize for your troubles. This sounds to me like you've got a corrupted Earthcomber file somewhere on your device. We need to try to resolve it by reducing it to the base level. We'll do this by cleaning your device entirely of Earthcomber. Note: You don't need to alter anything on your desktop computer.

  1. Uninstall Earthcomber from your device as you normally would.
  2. Next, we're going to make sure all of the Earthcomber files and directories have been removed from your device. Start File Explorer on your device.
    1. First, look in "Program Files" there should not be an Earthcomber application, neither should there be an Earthcomber directory. If they exist, manually delete them.
    2. Next, look in the "My Documents" directory. There should be an Earthcomber directory, delete it.
    3. Finally, if you have an SD Card (or any memory card), eject it.
  3. Now, we're going to re-create the Earthcomber directories. If you find any of these still existing, delete them first. The Earthcomber directories that we need for this test are:
    1. DEVICE:\My Documents\Earthcomber\Maps
    2. DEVICE:\My Documents\Earthcomber\Data
  4. Next, we're going to download some basic Earthcomber files and copy them to the device. First, the application itself. Download it and place it directly into "DEVICE:\My Documents\Earthcomber". Here's the link: http://www.earthcomber.com/download/wince/Earthcomber.exe
  5. We need a map, let's start go with Tulsa, OK. Everyone's favorite city.
    1. The map: http://www.earthcomber.com/download/maps/TulsaOK.pdb, put it in "DEVICE:\My Documents\Earthcomber\Maps"
    2. The data: http://www.earthcomber.com/download/comb/EC_TulsaOK_loc.pdb, put it in "DEVICE:\My Documents\Earthcomber\Data"
  6. That's the absolutely minimum amount needed to run Earthcomber. You won't be able to find anything, but let's see if you can start Earthcomber and view beautiful Tulsa.
    1. Using File Explorer, go to "DEVICE:\My Documents\Earthcomber" and tap on "Earthcomber" in that directory.
    2. Acknowledge our disclaimer, then tap the "Maps Onboard" button. Select, Tulsa, tap "OK" on the popup, then tap "View Map".
    3. Did it work? If it didn't, post you're results here.
  7. Now, we're going to add support files one at a time until we have all of the basics. Below I'll give you a link to download the file, a destination into which you should place it. For each one, re-start Earthcomber and view the map. If it fails on any, let me know where it failed.
    1. Landmarks: http://www.earthcomber.com/download/landmark/landmarks.pdb, place it in "DEVICE:\My Documents\Earthcomber\Data"
    2. Resources: http://www.earthcomber.com/download/resource/EC_Resource_WM.pdb, place it also into "DEVICE:\My Documents\Earthcomber\Data"
    3. A looklist: http://www.earthcomber.com/download/llpdb/EC_Let's_Eat!_ll.pdb, place it into "DEVICE:\My Documents\Earthcomber/Data"
    4. Your map. Well, now it's time to try the map that was giving you trouble. First, download it fresh. I can't give you the direct address for it, but it would be something like: http://www.earthcomber.com/download/maps/CountyST.pdb. You need to replace "County" with your county name removing spaces and punctuation, but keeping the case. Also, replaced "ST" with the 2 letter abbreviation for your state. "St. Louis, Missouri" would be "StLouisMO.pdb".
    5. Your county's data file. Similar to the above link it would just add "EC_" to the beginning of the county name and "_loc" after the state code. Something like: http://www.earthcomber.com/download/comb/EC_CountyST_loc.pdb
  8. If you're still here, it's time to try the normal usage with the Earthcomber Updater. Note that the Earthcomber Updater will install the Earthcomber application under "Program Files" on your device. So, to save space you might want to delete "Earthcomber.exe" from "DEVICE:\My Documents\Earthcomber".

Despite the length of the response, I hope that you do follow these directions to help us determine what might have occurred on your device so that we can attempt to prevent it in the future.

Please post your results here or e-mail Earthcomber support.

Sincerely,
Randy Wilson

gwes.exe error

I'm getting the same error on my Treo 700wx. I went through the steps and got to step 6. When I hit veiw map I got the error again.

"A problem has occurred with gwes.exe"

I also get the error when I exit.

Possible Workarounds For GWES Error

We're still trying to find the cause of this issue. We've duplicated it, but then it's gone away. Our best guesses as to why it has gone away are below:

  1. Start Earthcomber and choose "My Last Location".
  2. From the main screen, choose "Search for Favorites".
  3. Choose any looklist, like "Auto Needs".
  4. Choose any keyword, like "Auto Repair".
  5. Tap a location, I chose "Jiffy Lube".
  6. Tap the "Map" tab.
  7. Tap the "Map Controls" link at the bottom.
  8. Let us know if you get the normal map screen.

Another workaround to try is the following:

  1. Start Earthcomber and choose "City or Landmark".
  2. Tap your region, then tap your state.
  3. Tap the first letter of the city your in. Tap a second, if required.
  4. Choose your city.
  5. Choose a landmark in the city.
  6. Tap "OK" when it tells you that your location has been set.
  7. Finally, tap "View Map" from the "Main Screen".
  8. Let us know if you get the normal map screen.

Again, we're trying hard to solve this issue, so please let us know if you try either or both of the above and tell us what happened.

Sincerely,
Randy Wilson
